Repair Shop Business

The repairs are the easy part; the stock, the rules and the paperwork decide whether the shop makes money

This guide is for the business side of repair rather than the bench: how to start, what to stock, what to insure, how to store and ship lithium cells, and what the UK market is doing.

Three routes, and you only need one of them

Take the route that matches what you are dealing with this month.

01

Start or grow

Take this route if you are setting up or scaling. The decisions that matter early are pricing, premises and which repairs you actually take on.

02

Stay compliant

Take this route before you handle cells at scale or sign a lease. Insurance, battery storage and shipping are the three areas where a small shop carries more risk than it realises.

03

Understand the market

Take this route when planning stock or pricing. Customer behaviour and repairability are shifting, and both change what is worth holding on the shelf.

The customer side of the shop

Two habits decide how much repeat work a shop gets, and both are about communication rather than repair skill.

Assessing damage honestly

Customers arrive with a range of problems, from a screen that needs replacing to one that needs cleaning and a new protector. Being able to say "this does not need a repair" is what builds the trust that brings the customer back for the job that does. The assessment guides here set out what can be handled at home, what a shop should quote, and which symptoms mean the device should be isolated rather than repaired on the spot.

Data, privacy and handover

Data handling is now part of the repair conversation. Customers want to know their photos and messages are safe while the device is on the bench, and a shop that can explain its backup and privacy practice wins work it would otherwise lose. The guides cover what to back up before a repair, what a shop can realistically recover, and how to handle personal data during the job without creating a liability.

What actually decides whether a repair shop makes money — four things

Four variables, and only one of them is about repair skill.

01

Stock that moves

Cash tied up in slow parts is the most common reason a busy shop is not a profitable one. Depth on high-volume models, to-order on the rest.

02

Pricing that includes risk

Every price has to carry the cost of the occasional comeback, the consumables and the time. A price without that margin is a discount you did not intend to give.

03

Compliance you can evidence

Insurance cover, battery storage and shipping rules are the areas where a small shop carries more risk than it realises.

04

Trust and repeat work

Honest assessments and clear data handling bring customers back. The repair is one transaction; the relationship is the business.

Repair business questions

The short answers, each linked to the article set behind it.

What insurance does a phone repair shop need in the UK?

Cover for the premises and stock, public liability, and specific cover for customers’ devices while they are in your possession, which is the part shops most often overlook. Battery storage and shipping may carry their own conditions, so it is worth confirming them with the insurer rather than assuming.

How much stock should a new shop hold?

Depth on the two or three models you see weekly, and order everything else to job. Stock turns into profit only when it sells, so a broad shallow inventory is usually better than a narrow deep one while you are learning your customers.

Can a small shop ship lithium batteries?

Yes, within the rules: correct packaging, labelling, declaration and a compliant carrier service. The category matters, because a loose cell and a battery inside a device are not shipped under the same conditions, and getting it wrong is a safety issue rather than a paperwork one.

Why do customers choose repair over replacement?

Cost is only part of it. Data, familiarity and sustainability all play a role, and the trend has moved further in that direction as device prices rose. The market guides cover what that means for the parts a shop should hold.

Should a shop offer data recovery?

Offering basic backup and transfer is expected now. Full recovery from a failed board is a different service with different equipment, and it is better to state clearly what you can and cannot do than to attempt recovery on a device you cannot read.

Ask about trade accounts and stock planning

Tell us what you repair most and how you currently buy parts. You will get a stock recommendation that matches your volume, with trade pricing and the minimum order that makes sense for a shop your size.
