Use model-specific pre-cut adhesive when the repair manual calls for a shaped enclosure seal and the frame is clean, flat and undamaged. Liquid repair adhesive may suit a different bonding job or an irregular surface only when its manufacturer states compatibility with those materials. Neither option proves that a repaired phone has regained its original water-resistance rating.

Why pre-cut adhesive is easier to verify
A correct pre-cut gasket can be checked against the phone’s speaker, sensor, microphone and screw openings before liners are removed. It gives a repeatable path and avoids a hand-applied bead flowing into a cut-out. It still fails if the wrong model is ordered, the strip is stretched, the frame retains old adhesive, or alignment is rushed.
iFixit recommends model-shaped pre-cut adhesive for the cited iPhone display procedure and describes only a limited contribution to water resistance. Follow the actual model guide rather than transferring that answer to every enclosure.
Liquid glue adds variables
A liquid product introduces bead width, amount, open time, squeeze-out, pressure, curing conditions and material compatibility. Obtain the product’s current technical and safety information. Keep it away from microphones, earpiece mesh, cameras, buttons, connectors and display openings. More adhesive is not a substitute for better preparation.

Prepare and dry-fit before bonding
- Confirm the exact model and the manual’s specified adhesive.
- Remove old residue using a method compatible with the frame, display and coatings.

Surface preparation decides whether either method can work
Adhesive cannot compensate for loose shards, old foam, grease, dust, a bent mid-frame or a replacement part that does not sit flush. Work through the manufacturer’s cleaning and preparation instructions. Inspect every edge and cut-out before removing a gasket liner or applying a liquid bead. If the frame is visibly warped, solve that structural problem first; forcing a screen down with more adhesive can leave pressure points and future lifting.
Dry-fitting is the useful checkpoint. Put the unbonded part in position, confirm that camera, speaker, microphone, sensor and button openings align, and check that the display sits at the intended height. If it does not fit dry, adhesive will not fix the underlying mismatch.

- Check cut-outs and corners before pressing it down; do not pull a too-short strip into place.

Liquid adhesive needs a written product instruction
For a liquid product, read the current label, safety information and cure guidance for that specific formulation. Apply only where the procedure calls for it and only after confirming it is compatible with the intended materials. Keep the application away from ports, buttons, speaker openings and sensors. If a controlled, narrow bead cannot be placed without risk, the task is unsuitable for that adhesive method.
Do not confuse repair adhesive with optical bonding materials used for glass-only refurbishment. Those processes require different materials, equipment and alignment controls. A normal enclosure reseal guide is not a substitute for a display-refurbishment procedure.
After resealing
Follow the stated pressure and cure time, then check that the part sits evenly and that buttons, ports, microphones and speakers remain unobstructed. Run the functional tests again. Explain to the phone owner that avoiding water remains the prudent choice unless the repair has been validated by a process that actually tests the device’s sealing performance.
Common questions
Can I reuse the original adhesive strip?
No. Once the enclosure has been opened, the original strip has been disturbed. Use the model-appropriate replacement specified by the repair procedure.
Can I add extra liquid glue around a pre-cut gasket?
Do not make that a default. Extra glue can overflow into components and complicate a future repair. Use it only where a compatible, model-specific procedure identifies a real need.
