Choose a wireless charger by the exact phone model, certified standard, magnetic attachment requirement and power-adapter specification. Qi is the broad wireless-charging standard. Qi2 adds a magnetic alignment profile for compatible products, while MagSafe is Apple’s product and accessory system. A magnetic ring or the word “compatible” does not by itself prove Qi2 certification or a particular charging speed.

The Wireless Power Consortium states that Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile was based on MagSafe technology contributed by Apple. That common technical lineage does not make every magnetic charger an Apple MagSafe Charger, and it does not turn an adhesive magnetic ring into a certified Qi2 product.
Does Qi2 always mean 15W?
No. Treat a fixed “Qi2 equals 15W” rule as outdated. The WPC now describes Qi2 25W alongside earlier Qi2 products. The result still depends on the exact certified charger, the receiving device and system conditions. Confirm the model in the WPC product database or the manufacturer’s current specification rather than relying on packaging shorthand.
Apple’s current MagSafe guidance also shows why the complete chain matters: peak charging varies by iPhone model, charger part number, adapter wattage and system conditions. A higher-wattage plug cannot create support that the phone or charger lacks.
Check compatibility in the right order
- Identify the phone exactly. Use its model name and regional variant, not “iPhone” or “Samsung” alone.
- Read the phone maker’s charging page. Record supported Qi, Qi2 or MagSafe conditions and any model-specific maximum.
- Identify the charger model. Require a model number and an explicit certification claim.
- Check the power input. Match the required adapter output and cable; some pads are sold without the needed plug.

Magnetic attachment and charging are separate claims
A magnetic stand can hold a phone without charging it. A Qi pad can charge without magnets. A case can improve alignment but cannot add a wireless receiver to a phone that lacks one. Read each listing for three separate facts: attachment, wireless-charging standard and advertised power under stated conditions.
Be careful with add-on rings. Their position must match the receiving coil, and metal or poor placement can interfere with charging. Use an accessory approved for the exact phone and charger rather than guessing the coil position.
Certification is more useful than a similar-looking logo
Search the WPC product database when certification affects the purchase. Match the brand and model, not just a product family. A listing that says “Qi style”, “for Qi phones” or “MagSafe type” is not equivalent to a traceable certification record. Also distinguish the WPC Qi or Qi2 mark from an ordinary magnet graphic.

How should Android buyers read MagSafe language?
