Wireless Charging Not Working: A Case and Alignment Checklist

When wireless charging stops, test the power source first, then the phone’s position, case and attached accessories. A phone that charges bare and centred but fails in its case has a different problem from a phone that does not charge on any known-working pad. Change one variable at a time before buying a replacement.

Start with these checks:

  • Confirm that the pad, cable and power adapter receive power.
  • Place the phone flat and move it slowly around the charging area.
  • Remove the case, cards, magnetic rings, grips and metal plates.
  • Let a hot phone cool, then test again without using it.
  • Cross-test one known-working phone or charger if available.

Which symptom are you seeing?

Symptom Likely area to test first Useful next check
No charging indication at any position Pad power, cable, adapter or phone compatibility Reconnect power, try a known-working wall socket and verify the exact phone supports wireless charging.
Charging starts and stops Alignment, movement, case thickness or heat Remove the case, centre the phone and leave it untouched on a cool surface.
Works without the case Case material, thickness or an attached accessory Remove cards, rings, grips and magnetic or metal inserts; use a case documented for the charging system.
Works on one pad but not another Charger, power adapter or standard compatibility Check the failed pad’s exact model, certification and required input adapter.
Charges but is unexpectedly slow Power supply, negotiated charging level, temperature or phone use Use the specified adapter and cable, close demanding apps and compare at a similar battery level.

Does the charging pad have the right power source?

A wireless pad still depends on a wired input. Disconnect and firmly reconnect its cable at both ends, then test a wall socket that works with another device. Use the adapter specification required by the pad manufacturer. A plug that physically fits does not prove that it supplies the voltage and current profile needed for the pad’s higher charging modes.

If the indicator never lights, test the detachable cable and adapter separately where the manufacturer allows it. If the indicator flashes, record the pattern and check the charger’s manual; flashing can signal poor alignment, a foreign object or an input problem, but the meaning is model-specific.

Find the phone’s real charging position

The receiving coil is not always at the visual centre of the phone. Samsung’s current guidance for some foldable models explicitly notes that the coil can sit lower than the centre. Remove the case, place the phone flat, and move it in small steps until the charging indication remains stable. Do not keep lifting and dropping the phone, because that changes both position and contact with the surface.

  1. Lay the powered pad on a firm, level surface clear of metal objects.
  2. Place the bare phone flat on the pad and wait several seconds.
  3. If nothing happens, move the phone a small distance vertically and horizontally.
  4. Once charging starts, leave the phone untouched for two minutes.
  5. Note the stable position before refitting the case.

Can a phone case stop wireless charging?

Yes. Distance and material both matter. A thick case, a wallet with cards, a kickstand, a grip, a magnetic ring in the wrong position or a vehicle-mount plate can keep the coils too far apart or introduce metal between them. Samsung advises removing covers, cards and magnetic objects during diagnosis; Apple also tells users to remove sensitive items such as cards from between the phone and charger.

Test the bare phone first. Then refit only the empty case and test in the position already proven to work. Add any detachable accessory last. This order identifies the layer that changes the result. A case marketed as magnetic or wireless-compatible still needs to match the exact phone and charging system.

Remove foreign objects and check for movement

Clean the contact surfaces with the equipment disconnected, following each manufacturer’s care instructions. Remove coins, keys, cards and small metal objects from the area. Do not place a damaged or wet phone, charger or cable back into service.

Movement can also break the charging link. Vibration from notifications may shift a phone on a flat Qi pad; Apple notes that movement can change position, while magnetic systems are designed to help alignment. Turn off vibration briefly for the test or place the pad where the phone cannot slide.

Temperature and software are later checks

Charging systems reduce or pause power when temperature is outside the device’s operating conditions. If the phone or pad feels unusually hot, stop charging, remove the case and allow both to cool naturally in a dry room. Do not chill a phone rapidly. Retest without playing games, streaming video or using navigation.

Restart the phone and install current system updates after the physical checks. On devices with a wireless-charging setting or diagnostic tool, confirm the setting and run the manufacturer test. A software step should not replace a cross-test when the pad, cable or adapter may be faulty.

Use a two-way cross-test

Test result What it supports
Your phone charges on another compatible pad The first pad, its cable or its adapter needs further testing.
Another compatible phone charges on your pad Your phone, its case, its settings or exact compatibility becomes the focus.
Neither phone charges on the pad Check the pad’s power chain and condition before replacing a phone component.
Your phone fails on multiple known-working pads Confirm device support and seek manufacturer or repair diagnosis.

When should you stop using the charger?

Disconnect equipment with a split cable, loose connector, liquid exposure, swelling, scorching, burning smell or persistent abnormal heat. If the phone only charges when pressed, twisted or held at one exact angle after case and alignment checks, do not keep forcing the connection. A documented compatible charger and a device inspection are safer next steps.

Common questions

Why does wireless charging work only without my case?

The case or an attached card, ring, grip or metal plate is changing coil distance or alignment. Test the empty case separately, then use one explicitly documented for the phone and charger.

Why does charging stop after a few minutes?

Heat, movement, a weak power source or poor alignment can interrupt charging. Let the equipment cool, use the specified adapter and repeat the test with the bare phone left still.
